A grocery store favorite, the Red Haven Peach tree produces medium-sized fruit with firm, sweet freestone flesh. Fruit ripens from July to August, depending on your growing zone. 

The Red Haven Peach is easy to grow and will survive in many environments. It is adapted to cold climates and is disease resistant. The Red Haven is a self-pollinating tree - however, your tree will produce more fruit with another peach tree planted within 30 feet.

Planting

The Red Haven Peach tree prefers well-drained soil and full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight). When you are ready to plant, dig a hole twice as wide as the tree's root ball and just as deep. Mix compost with the soil around the tree to promote proper drainage. Water as you backfill to remove any air pockets. 

Watering

Keep the soil moist. Watering once a week is typically sufficient until the tree is established. During times of extreme heat, you tree may need more water. 

Fertilizing

Once your tree has been in the ground for 6 weeks, apply 1 lb. of a balanced fertilizer such as 12-12-12. Before the tree pushed out new growth in the spring, apply 3/4 lb. of fertilizer. Repeat the 3/4 lb. fertilization in the summer and fall. 

Maintenance

In order to encourage fruit production, do not prune your Red Haven Peach tree in the first two years. Once established, prune your tree in late winter or early spring. To achieve an open center shape, prune your tree so that the center section has only two or three main branches. 

Tip: once established and your tree begins to bear fruit, thin your peached out to allow 8 inches of space around each peach so it grows and matures properly. Thinning out your peaches will increase your overall production. Peaches are fully ripe when there is no green left on the skin and they come off the tree easily with a slight twist.
