The Montmorency Cherry tree is known for being the most popular tart cherry tree in the U.S. The tree produces bright red fruit with firm yellow flesh. The cherries have a rich, tart flavor that is sought after by bakers and jam makers alike.

The Montmorency Cherry tree is self-fertile, which means you only need one in order to produce fruit. However, like most self-fertile fruit trees, if you plant an additional tree your harvest will be greater.

Did you know? Drinking the tart cherry juice of the Montmorency Cherry tree can help you sleep better – they are full of natural melatonin!

Montmorency Cherry Tree Care

Planting

Montmorency Cherry trees require full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun), so choose your location carefully. Water your tree immediately after receiving it and plant as soon as possible. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and several inches deeper. Place your tree in the hole and backfill with soil, gently tamping down and watering as you go to get rid of any air pockets. Add a layer of mulch to the top to preserve moisture.

Watering

If your tree receives an inch of rain every 7-10 days, then you do not need to water it. However, during long periods of extreme heat or prolonged periods without rain, you may need to additional water. Use a hose at a slow trickle for 30-60 seconds once a week. Not sure when to water? Push your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it is dry, it's time to water.

Fertilizing

Fertilize in the spring and again midsummer with a low-nitrogen, balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Apply 6-8 inches away from the trunk. Apply 2 weeks after planting and 4 weeks after the first application.

Maintenance

Prune any dead or diseased branches. To encourage horizontal branch growth, prune once a year in late winter when the tree is dormant.
