How To Care for your new Dwarf Alberta Spruce

Spring and fall are great times for planting your Dwarf Alberta Spruce. However, winter is fine as long as the ground isn't frozen and if you are in an area that has mild summers, like zones 2-5, summer is a great time to plant as well.

The Alberta Spruce thrives in full to part sun and adapts to any soil that is well drained.  A neutral to acidic soil is best.  If you know you have an alkaline soil choose an acidic fertilizer like Espoma's Hollytone.  After planting, adding a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch will help keep the soil moist.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.  Water your new tree deeply a couple times a week for the first month or two.  After your plants are established, they only need watered when the soil is dry. This Spruce is drought tolerant after establishing.  Fertilize when planting and in early spring yearly with a slow release fertilizer.  If your soil is on the basic side choose a fertilizer for acid loving plants. The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is wind, cold, and deer resistant.  Be sure your tree is planted where it has plenty of air flow.

When properly cared for, the Alberta Spruce rarely has issues with pests and disease.  If you notice brown dry spots on your Spruce Spider Mites may be the culprit.  Treat with insecticidal soap for minor infections and Bifenthrin for more severe infestations. Do not use horticultural oil on Alberta Spruces.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Small accent evergreen
Douglas I on Apr 29, 2017
We decided to purchase the Dwarf Alberta Spruce due to it's size, shape, and the length of time it takes to obtain full maturity. We wanted a small conical evergreen tree to place off of the corner of our home. The fact that it takes 25-30 to reach full size was ideaL for us as we didn't want one that would get too big, too rapidly.

How tall and wide will this grow up to?
Debbie C on Aug 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 6-8 tall and 5-6 feet wide
Can it be planted in a pot and kept there or does it have to be planted in the ground in the spring?
A shopper on Sep 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: these actually do fabulously in pots. They are super cold hardy growing in the ground into zone 2 so as long as you are at least a zone 3 you shouldn't have any problem growing in a container.
Can I prune the dwarf Alberta spruce to stay shorter than mature height and mature width? I'd like to keep it at 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide.
Jamie J on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can. Just shear a little but after it flushes out in the spring. They are slow growing
Can it be cut back when it encroached a fence?
A shopper on Jul 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can! You don't want to cut too much off because it will show the inside of the plant. Eventually it will grow and cover it back up with the added sunlight.
Do you charge separate shipping on each item Alberta spruce?
Christine P on Dec 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The shipping is calculated by the contents of your order. Depending on what items are in the cart, the box sizes, weight, and distance is taken into the calculation.
Is this variety suitable to the climate in the South (AL)?
A shopper on Dec 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I live in Southern Utah where the temperature get to 112 in the summers and in the low teens in the winters. I just make sure it has good watering in the summers, and it has done great! I have about 20 dwarf alberta spruce in my yard - I love them!
When is a good time to transplant ?
A shopper on Nov 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: During the winter months would be the "best" time to transplant any tree or shrub. They require less moisture and have a much higher succes rate.
can I I trim this tree to fit around a gravestonenextto a gravestone?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This Spruce tolerates heavy pruning so it will work great for this purpose.
