How to Care for Perennials

There are many different types of perennial plants so it is important to check the requirements for your plant specifically. Most perennials are drought tolerant once established, but enjoy a drink when the ground is dry. Water deeply a couple times per week when your perennial is newly planted. Feed plants in spring with a balanced slow release fertilizer. When growing perennials in pots use an organic planting mix and choose a pot that drains well. Potted plants dry out much faster than plants in the ground so be sure to keep up with watering.

What Is The Difference Between Annuals And Perennials

Annuals are short lived plants that only survive for one growing season. Perennials die back to the ground in fall or winter, but come back in spring from their roots which survive over the winter. Annuals must be planted every year unless they are able to reseed themselves with seeds that can survive winter. Perennial plants do not have to be replanted and come back year after year.

When To Plant Perennials

Spring and fall are the best seasons to plant perennials throughout the United States. Summer planting works well in regions with mild summers. Heat tolerant perennials can handle summer planting in most areas with plenty of supplemental water. Zones 9, 10, and 11 should avoid planting in summer, but winter planting is a great option in these subtropical climates. For cold regions be sure to plant at least 6 weeks prior to the ground freezing to give your plants some time to establish.

How To Plant Perennials

Keep your potted perennial watered well until you are able to plant it. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot. Place your plant in the hole and check to ensure the root ball is about ⅛ inch above the soil line. Backfill the soil and gently pack it down with your hands to eliminate any air pockets. Do not stomp the soil with your feet. This can compact your soil and is unhealthy for your plant. Water your newly planted perennial deeply. Add a layer of mulch to keep competing weeds away and help the soil retain water. Learn More About How to Plant Perennials.

What Perennials Grow in Shade?

The most popular shade loving perennials are heuchera (coral bells) and hosta. PlantingTree carries hostas like the Patriot Hosta, Big Daddy Hosta, Blue Angel Hosta, and Sum and Substance Hosta. Guacamole Coral Bells and Silver Scrolls Coral Bells are 2 gorgeous varieties of heuchera. The Brilliance Autumn Fern also enjoys shade. Daylilies are flowering perennial plants that can grow in part shade.
