How To Water New Grass Seed

Have you planted grass seed a few times with little success or maybe you just want to know how to water new grass seed? We all know grass seed needs water to germinate, grow, and establish, but watering new grass seed can be hard when you don’t have the right nozzle or water pressure. So let’s talk about watering new grass seed and get you set up for success! After all, watering new grass seed properly is crucial for growing a beautiful lush, green lawn.

Supplies for Watering New Grass Seed

Prepare for watering new grass seed by purchasing a hose and a nozzle with a misting option. A misting sprinkler is another good option, but just be sure the pressure is low and/or the mist is fine.

How to Water New Grass Seed

Step 1: Water The Ground

Water the ground before you broadcast your grass seed. Or spread grass seed soon after a nice rain. This sets your seeds up for success and helps them stick to the ground while you are preparing to cover them.

Step 2: Broadcast Grass Seed

Broadcast grass seed at the recommended rate for your property. This means scattering seed by hand or machinery over your property.

Step 3: Cover With Fine Soil

Cover your seed with a layer of fine soil or better yet, TripleStart HydroCover Seed Starter. This 3-in-1 mulching granule technology increases germination rates and the speed of germination, by keeping grass seed in place and helping the soil retain moisture longer. Alternatively a light layer of straw can be used.

Step 4: Water

Your grass seed has been sown and covered. Now it is time for watering new grass seed! Test your watering supplies (away from your new grass seed) to ensure that they will not blast your seed away. You want a fine, light mist to gently soak the ground. You don’t want running or pooling water. This will flush your seeds into pockets and corners. For the first 7 to 10 days or until your grass begins to germinate water this way 2 to 3 times per day.

Step 5: Reduce Watering

Once your grass seed starts to grow you can reduce watering to once daily and water more deeply with a regular sprinkler or hose nossle to help the roots grow and establish properly.

Pro Tip:

Check the weather forecast before you plant grass seed. If you can time it perfectly, do it. Ideally, you want it to rain before planting. However, if possible, it's best to avoid heavy rains after planting for a few days. Cloudy days in the post-seeding forecast are good, but stormy days, not so much.

Now you know how to water new grass seed. You are sure to be successful in growing a gorgeous green lawn. Happy planting!
