Dwarf Encore Azaleas | The Collection

February 8, 2022 Jill Raver
Filed in: Shrub Information

Encore Azaleas are pretty amazing. With so many different colors (from reds to purples to pinks, whites, and even bicolor blooms) to choose from you are sure to find just what you are looking for in a flowering shrub. Encore Azaleas are similar to the famous Knock Out® Roses with their bloom abundance and lengthy bloom period. Brighten your landscape with colorful flowers in spring, summer, AND fall! From dwarf varieties that generally grow 2 to 3 feet tall and intermediate shrubs that grow to about 5 feet, Encore Azaleas are all fairly petite and fit into any landscape.

Encore Azaleas are all evergreen so no bare branches in winter! A big difference from traditional azaleas is that Encores can grow in full sun so you definitely have more options to show off these fantastic bloomers. They still work well as foundation bushes not minding some shade. Many Encore Azaleas are cold hardy to zone 6. This is pretty exciting for many azalea lovers left out in the cold by azaleas that prefer warm southern climates. For zones even colder than 6 Encore Azaleas are awesome in containers! Encore azaleas are low maintenance and surprisingly easy to grow. Once they are planted properly and established they don’t ask for much! Buy Encore Azaleas Online.

Encore Azalea Care

Sun
Full sun to part shade. Encore azaleas will perform best with at least 4-6 hours of sun. While your Encore azalea will still grow and even bloom in shady areas they are less likely to rebloom and the blooms won't be as prolific.

Soil
Azaleas prefer soil that drains well and is acidic. If you have alkaline soil, be sure to amend it. To acidify your soil amend with compost, elemental sulfur, or use fertilizers specific for acid loving plants. To improve drainage in something like a heavy clay soil, add compost and be sure to loosen up the soil well before planting.

Water
Once established Encore azaleas are drought tolerant. Water deeply with a hose at the base of your plant a few times per week when newly planted. Keep the soil moist for the first few months while you plants are establishing. For best results water deeply once weekly for the first year after planting your azaleas.

Mulch
Apply about 2 inches of mulch extending out a few inches past the root zone. Using pine straw or pine bark is a great option as they will help acidify your soil over time as they break down.

Fertilizer
Choose a balanced slow release fertilizer. Fertilize in late winter or early spring before flowering for best results.

Pruning
You don’t need to prune Encore azaleas, but pruning after they are done blooming can help encourage a bushier growth and renew an older plant. You can use pruning to control size, but don't prune off more than 1/3 of the plant for best results.

Pro Tip: When growing Encore Azaleas in containers in the coldest recommended growing zone or less you must provide winter protection by moving them inside or at least offer some protection from temperature extremes. Plants in pots are not as winter hardy as the same shrub planted in the ground by at least 1 zone.
