Best Fertilizer For Blueberries

If you are planning to grow blueberry bushes or you have them in your garden, then applying fertilizer will help give you sweet and quality fruits during harvest. The blueberry plant performs well in acidic soil. Thus, fortifying the soil with the right nutrients will help keep the blueberry in tip-top shape.

Since the blueberry plant has roots that grow about 12-inches, it becomes difficult to absorb nutrients and water as plants with deep roots. Also, they have challenges growing through compacted soil. So, adding fertilizer helps them retain water.

What is the Best Fertilizer for Blueberries?

There are different varieties of fertilizers in the market. However, not all can fit the blueberries. High acidic fertilizers are crucial for lowering the soil PH. How can you know whether the fertilizer is acidic? Fertilizer that contains ammonium sulfate or Sulphur-coated urea tends to have a lower PH which can be great for planting blueberries.

Apart from this, the fertilizer that is high in Nitrogen can be excellent for strengthening the roots. However, you need to be careful not to choose fertilizers with nitrates such as calcium nitrate and chloride because they can cause severe damage to the plant.

At times you can encounter reddish yellow color appearing near the edges of the leaves. It is a sign that the blueberry bush has a magnesium deficiency. Also, if you find out that the leaves are yellow with green veins, the plant is most likely to have an iron deficiency. However, these issues should not bring a headache. You can treat them with nutrient appropriate fertilizers.

What is the Best Fertilizer for Container-Grown Blueberries?

One of the main advantages of planting blueberries in a container is the ease of controlling the soil PH. Since most soils do not come with a PH that will help the blueberries to thrive, adding fertilizer can enhance growth. Most fertilizers for container-grown blueberries can work perfectly with the blueberries that grow in soil. Fertilizer with nitrogen in the form of urea or ammonium is perfect for the blueberries that grow in a container. Ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) is among the best nitrogen fertilizer.

What fertilizer is the best for blueberries in fall?

Applying nitrogen fertilizer of about 30lbs per acre or ammonium sulfate of about 142 pounds per acre can enhance growth and help the plant to produce big fruits. If there is excessive growth in the plant, you can reduce the amount of nitrogen.
