Product Details

Looking for that perfect shrub to add just a little pizzazz to your yard? We suggest the Wintergreen Boxwood. Also known as the Korean Boxwood, this small yet beautiful shrub is perfect for all yard designs, big or small.

The Wintergreen Boxwood is a slow growing shrub. It tends to grow between 2-3 inches annually. At maturity it will reach between 2-4 feet in height and 3-5 feet in width. This boxwood is covered with hardy, green foliage that becomes darker as the Wintergreen Boxwood ages. The leaves of the Wintergreen are fairly small and delicate. They have both a smooth look and feel to them as well. When other Boxwood shrubs turn yellow and lose their color in the dreadful winter months, the Wintergreen is still vibrant and green.

The possibilities are endless with the Wintergreen Boxwood. This Boxwood helps enhance the beauty of small, compact yards. They are very well suited for a hedge or low growing border for a sophisticated look. You could line your driveway or walkway to add that little bit of elegance. The Wintergreen Boxwood looks great when used as a backdrop for lower growing perennials. Maybe you are just looking for the perfect accent plant for your terrace, patio or porch. Just place the Wintergreen Boxwood in a decorative pot and there you have it, it's that easy!

Wintergreen Boxwoods can grow in full sun but prefer partially shaded locations. They adapt well to a variety of soils. If left untrimmed, the Wintergreen grows into a toadstool mushroom shape. Wintergreen Boxwoods are usually shaped into a round spheres, square cubes or ovals. When they are well trimmed they will hold shape for quite some time due their slow growing pace. Whether you are a beginner in the planting world or a professional this easy to maintain shrub adds a great look to any landscape design with only minimal maintenance.

How To Care for your new Wintergreen Boxwood

The Wintergreen Boxwood grows in full sun to part shade. It adapts well to a variety of well-draining soils.  Water deeply twice weekly when newly planted to help the roots grow properly.   Add 2-3 inches of mulch to help your new plants stay moist.  Once established this boxwood is drought tolerant.  However, boxwoods will perform best when watered once weekly during dry periods, including in winter.  Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer to give your boxwood a boost.  Pruning can be done anytime of the year.  However, it is best to avoid pruning in late fall as pruning will stimulate new growth that will be too tender to survive the freezing, winter temperatures.

This boxwood is deer, rabbit, and pollution tolerant as well as pest and disease resistant.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

good service
The customer service is really good. I bough twice, the second time 2 of the shrubs were damaged. But they sent me back another 2 when they receive my complain email. Just the shrubs are smaller than I expected. Good experience.

How large are the three gallon plants?
bernie on Aug 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They are about 18" tall and 12" Wide
how far apart should you plant?
david d on Mar 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It doesn't really matter. Mine have been as close as possible and they are doing really well. The rootball gets really big. And the roots go very deep, but mine are right next to each other are are in good shape.
what cause the boxwood to turn brown?
reggie on Oct 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Over and under watering can cause browning. A "crunchy" feel indicates under and a soft feel indications over watering. I have seen some bronzing in boxwoods as well. This occurs in winter because of sun, wind, and cold. Keeping up on watering throughout winter helps with this.
how far from fence should you plant ?
A shopper on Aug 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We recommend planting 2-3 feet off the fence for ease in maintenance and pruning.
do they have a scent?
Linda G on Jun 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Wintergreen Boxwood can have a slight scent, but not unpleasant, and probably not noticeable to most people. I have a hypersensitive sense of smell. I am very happy with the Wintergreen Boxwood I ordered. It's doing great, growing like crazy, and I'm very happy with it!. Kathleen C.
How deep are the roots?
Pam H on Sep 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The roots will grow about the same size underground as the plant is above ground. This plant grows relatively slow and the roots are not invasive.
I have seen on a number of gardening websites and blogs (Including the University of Minnesota horticultural site) that Wintergreen Boxwoods are hardy to zone 4. Why do you only state hardy to zone 5?
A shopper on Jul 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There will always be some variation in zone recommendations. I do see where some recommend it into a zone 4. When researching it we found more recommendations of 5+ than 4+ so we went with that.
When and how much to trim boxwood?
A shopper on Nov 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can trim them at least twice a year for a hedge or 3 times a year for a more manicured look. They can be trimmed at any time of the year.
Can these be kept trim to a size of 18" high by 18-24" wide without causing harm or issues??
Ron D on Sep 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes!
