How To Care for your new Tuscarora Crape Myrtle Tree

Be sure you choose the right location and have the appropriate conditions for your new Tuscarora Crape Myrtle to thrive.  Luckily Crape Myrtles are pretty easy to grow and don't require much maintenance at all.  If you follow growing zone guidelines for your particular variety you can plant your crape myrtle just about any time of year.  Tuscarora Crape Myrtles grow in zones 7-11.  We do recommend to avoid planting when temperatures are above 85 degrees.

These trees prefer full sun, but can tolerate some shade and are adaptable to just about any soil as long as it is well-draining.  Crape Myrtles do enjoy a slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.0 or 6.5 being ideal, but as long as your soil isn't extremely alkaline there is no need to modify it.  Mulching with a 2-3 inch layer of pine straw or pine bark is ideal for crape myrtles.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as these increases the chances of pests and disease.  Mulching helps keep soil moist and protects roots during temperature extremes.   Crape Myrtles should be watered deeply about 2 times per week after planting for about 3 months.  After this establishment period, water deeply about once weekly when conditions are dry.  Crape Myrtles are drought tolerant once established.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost and help it achieve the best blooms.  Choose a balanced, slow release fertilizer.  If you know your soil is on the basic side choose a fertilizer that is for acid loving plants.  Crape Myrtles do not generally require pruning, but if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches.  Avoid the need to over prune your tree by choosing a variety that fits best in your chosen spot.  You can choose a variety that is only 5 feet tall up to varieties that grow over 30 feet tall.  Tuscarora Crape Myrtles grow up to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering and fertilization are the keys to your success.  There are not many pests or diseases that cause severe problems for crape myrtles.  Aphids are one of the few pests that attack crape myrtles.  Minor infections aren't likely to cause problems, but a severe infection can weaken your tree.  You can treat aphids naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  The Tuscarora crape myrtle is resistant to Powdery Mildew.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Crape Myrtle - In Memory of My Late Husband
This tree was given to me by my company as a condolence gift- I recently loss my husband. He and both absolutely love this plant!.. We have several planted throughout the golf community I reside in. I had it planted with some of my husband’s ashes.. I wake up every morning, look out my bedroom window down on the tree. Many of the leaves have left the tree, except for 5 or so.. figure that’s him?
It was planted in an area in my rear deck, facing the chair he loved sitting in while he, or I would light up the grill..
Love it .. Love it.. It’s how I start my mornings…lol I cannot wait until next spring when it’s in full bloom.

Would it last in Minnesota winters?
John K on Sep 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: definitely not. Crapes grow in zones 7 to 10. Minnesota is mainly a zone 2b to 4b.

Once you find your growing zone you can search on our site by your growing zone to find the best options for your area:)
Can you show me a photo of crepe myrtle that is selling for 79.99 ? My husband says it's probably a stick with no foliage???
Linda S on Jul 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is definitely not a stick. It has several developed trunks. These are actually the most mature crapes we have. The ones we have right now are literally busting out of the pots.
Will the crapes myrtle tree grow in Western Pennsylvania?
Gregory D on Jul 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would guess no. The coldest zone these grow in is a zone 7. Red Rockets are the only crapes we carry that grow in a zone 6 so that one may work for you. You can certainly check as some of PA is a zone 7. I still recommend mulching in really well in winter in zone 7a to protect the tree from the cold.

Is it too late to plant?
A shopper on Oct 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If you are in a zone that this crape myrtle is recommended for you shouldn't have any problem planting this late in the year. I wouldn't recommend putting it off much longer though.
