Product Details

The Red Dragon Japanese Maple is a stunning, dwarf maple with lacy, red foliage. Throughout the year delicate leaves change from shades of purple and red culminating in a superb cherry red in autumn.  The Red Dragon is one of the few varieties of Japanese Maple that tolerates full sun.

The Red Dragon is a perfect accent or focal tree for water, rock or meditation gardens.  Plant in a mixed bed with Junipers for out of this world texture.  Add a few rocks and your neighbors will think you hired a professional!

This hardy Japanese Maple is extremely low maintenance and easy to grow.  With proper watering this variety rarely has issues.  This compact tree can tolerate full sun to part shade.  Keeping your soil moist, but not wet will also help protect your Red Dragon from summer heat and sun.  Plan for a mature height and spread of around 8 feet.  This variety is great for containers.  There is no need to prune.  Japanese Maples should be treasured for their natural, unique, and beautiful growth.

Whether it is your first Japanese Maple or just the latest addition to your collection, the Red Dragon is an excellent choice!

How To Care for your new Red Dragon Japanese Maple

When planting your Lace Leaf Japanese Maple be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive.  Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant.  However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your Maple almost any time of the year.

The Red Dragon is much more sun tolerant than other Japanese Maples.  It can grow in full sun to part shade. Japanese Maples prefer soil that is well-drained, but moist, neutral to slightly acidic, and nutrient rich.  However, Japanese Maples will adapt to a variety of soils.  Mulching will keep the roots moist and protect them from extreme temperatures.  Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.  Japanese Maples should be watered often enough to keep the soil moist.  Do not allow the the soil to dry completely or be overly saturated.  Either condition can harm a Japanese Maple.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost. Choose a slow release fertilizer.  When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Lace Leaf Maples don't generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success.  Scale, Mites, and Aphids are insects that can occasionally affect Japanese Maples.  You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin. Another potential pest of Japanese Maples is the Japanese Beetle. Look into parasitic nematodes and bacillus thuringiensis for effective, organic control of this pest.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

It's a beautiful bush and I could not find it in my area
Joyce E on Jul 18, 2017
I liked the red colors, the weeping growth habit, the lacy leaves and small stature, as I plan to grow it in a container on my deck. I have also read that this variety holds the red color better than most other varieties -- in sun or shade.

I own 2 acres in issaquah Washington and have 4 of these Japanese maples in various spots with various lighting conditions. They all do well and in the fall they turn bright scarlet red. It is different than just a typical red japanese maple. I love them!

I would like to ask a question about the red dragon Japanese maple. The size indicates it is 2 to 3 ft tall. Is that the truck hight to the point where the branches begin? Thanks.
Megan C on Feb 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: this height is measured from the soil line to the top of the tree.
I want to use this for a front foundation planting, how far from the house should I plant it? 3'? Also is it able to be controlled from reaching such a large width of 10'? I'm ok w 6'.
Maryellen on Apr 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would go at least 4 or 5 feet from your house. You can prune them, but do it in winter or early spring. Never severely prune a japanese maple though. Just a few inches here and there.
How old are the red dragon Japanese maples?
Damian B on Mar 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: 3-4 years old
