Using the Honeycomb Butterfly Bush in the Landscape

The Honeycomb Butterfly bush can be used practically anywhere in your landscape as long as the chosen area receives plenty of sun. Use it as a foundation planting around your home or deck. It looks great included in a mass planting bed or even as a lone specimen. Plant is next to a walkway or patio, to ensure that you catch the sweet scent of this plant!

How to care for your Honeycomb Butterfly Bush

The Honeycomb Butterfly Bush performs best in full sun and well-drained soil.

Dig a hole twice the size of the pot that the plant has arrived in. Gently remove the plant from the pot and break up the root system to allow the roots the ability to penetrate the soil.  Place the plant in the hole, being sure that the top of the root ball is slightly higher that the surrounding ground level. Backfill the hole and tamp in the soil around the root ball to ensure all air pockets are removed. Water thoroughly. Once the plant is established, prune back vigorously every winter or early spring to maintain a bushy habit and don't forget to use our specialty fertilizer to keep your butterfly bush blooming!

How To Care for your new Honeycomb Butterfly Bush

When planting your Butterfly Bush be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new shrub to thrive.  Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant.  However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant almost any time of the year.

Butterfly bushes tolerate full sun and part shade and are adaptable to a variety of soils as long as your soil is well drained.  If your soil is nutrient rich your Butterfly bush will not require fertilizer.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting if your soil is lacking.  Choose a basic slow release fertilizer for flowering plants.  When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your bush in the hole. Water well when your plant is newly planted, but otherwise Butterfly bushes are drought tolerant and only require watering during dry, hot periods. Butterfly bushes don't require pruning, but if you would like to maintain size, these shrubs tolerate heavy pruning.  In cooler climates where this shrub acts more like a perennial, trim within a couple inches of the ground in late winter or early spring. Mulching is a good choice especially in colder regions to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success.  Butterfly bushes are quite resilient and only rarely have issues.  The most common pests affecting this shrub are Japanese beetles and caterpillars.  Japanese beetles can be controlled naturally or by applying bacillus thuringiensis or nematodes as well as hand picking.  There are chemical methods as well, but these tend not to work well this Insect.  Caterpillars should be hand picked.  There are pesticides to treat caterpillars, but these will kill the good caterpillars as well as the bad.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.
