The Emerald Green Thuja is the most popular, medium size privacy screen tree.  If you are looking for an evergreen hedge without the extreme height of the Thuja Green Giant or the Leyland Cypress this gorgeous arborvitae is the perfect choice.

The Emerald Green Arborvitae is beautifully shaped with stunning, lush, green foliage that is beyond compare.  Emerald Greens add value and beauty to any home, building, or property.  Many customers utilize this tree as a low maintenance living fence, but because of its unique flowing and twisting branched foliage the Emerald Green is prized as a single specimen as well.  This isn't your average, boring Christmas tree evergreen.  The shape is more cylindrical than pyramidal.  The dense, feathery foliage swirls and twirls around this plant creating a lovely. natural layered, but clean look that is unparalleled.

If you are seeking a nice specimen tree with some height (but not too much) for the front of your home, plant an Emerald Arborvitae on each side of a window.  This creates a softening affect that breaks up the wall and adds character to your home.  Under the windows you can plant your choice of shrubs.  For tons of blooms, bold color, and rich texture plant knockout roses in the back and drift roses in the front.  If you prefer evergreens, try a mix of Gold Mop Cypresses and junipers; this will offer year-round foliage, as well as rich texture and striking color contrast.   Emerald Greens are great anchors for the corners of your home as well.  Plant just one or groups of three for even more impact.  The mature size is 14 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide so this tree is great for any size yard.  For instant impact start with larger trees.  We offer a variety of sizes to suit any budget or landscape plan.

For a privacy hedge, space your new trees about 3 to 4 feet apart on center.  To showcase individual Emerald thujas plant at least 6 feet apart.

The Emerald Green Thuja is one of the easiest trees to grow.  They are for the most part maintenance free...yes maintenance FREE so you can spend your time enjoying your trees rather than fussing over them. Look forward to disease and pest resistance in this hardy evergreen.  Once established these trees are even drought tolerant and extremely cold hardy!

Plant your arborvitae in full sun for best color and growth.  This evergreen is adaptable to various soil types and environmental conditions.  Fertilize when planting and once yearly in spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer like the one we carry.  Our fertilizer is safe to use at the time of planting.  Avoid harsh chemical fertilizers that can burn the roots of your new tree.  There is no need to prune your arborvitae.

The Emerald Green Arborvitae is our favorite evergreen for a manageable privacy screen and for single specimen planting.  The lush and unique look of this striking evergreen really makes it stand out in the crowd.  This tree grows in zones 3 to 8 so it thrives in most of the United States.  Order yours today!

How To Care for your new Emerald Arborvitae Tree

The Emerald Green Thuja is one of the easiest trees to grow.  They are for the most part maintenance free...yes maintenance free so you can spend your time enjoying your trees rather than fussing over them. Look forward to disease and pest resistance in this hardy evergreen.  Once established these trees are even drought tolerant!

Emerald Arborvitae trees do need to be watered heavily at time of planting.  Be sure not to let your new trees dry out within the first few months before they are established.  Water deeply about 2 times per week rather than smaller amounts several times per week.  This ensures that the roots grow properly.  We recommend watering your trees as soon as they arrive even before you plant them.  This will ensure that the roots are moist and ready for planting.   Adding 2-3 inches of mulch is a great choice for newly planted Emerald Green Arborvitaes.  This will help keep the soil moist during the crucial early period when the roots are acclimating to their new home.

Plant your arborvitae in full sun.

Some "bronzing" is typical during very cold winters but is merely cosmetic and will fade away in spring.

For a privacy hedge, space your new trees about 3-4 feet apart on center for faster privacy.  To showcase individual Emerald thujas plant at least 6 feet apart.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Good Looking Trees
We ordered these emerald arborvitae trees from The Planting Tree back in September. So far so good! We used them to cover up our garbage can area. Arrived in great condition.

Beautiful aborvitaes
Can't begin to tell you how pleased I am with this order. My first time dealing with The Planting Tree. I have dealt with other online nurseries and have been really disappointed in you he past. These trees were not bare root but in pots and shipped 2 to a box. There were so healthy and green. Thank you very much. I am planting them in 4' high planters that will go into a fire pit area. So happy with this product.

Nice little trees
These trees arrived very well-packed, quite moist, and in great shape. I'd never ordered trees by mail / internet before, and I was a bit nervous, but The Planting Tree customer service representative I spoke with was comfortable to consult with, and the company sent excellent saplings: well-formed, attractive, and healthy.

I buy a 4-5 foot arborvitae now (December), can i keep it in the pot until Fall to plant it?
John N on Nov 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The sooner you get them out into their natural environment the better. As long as the ground is not frozen you should plant them.
I live in FL will this work in my area?
Kevin M on Jan 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you live in Northern Florida this tree will work. It will grow up to zone 8. We do not suggest this tree for central or southern florida.
How fast do they grow?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have only had these trees for three months. I would estimate that they have grown three to four inches in the three months. The trees are beautiful and thriving.
We bought five of these trees twice now. They were not purchased from this site but I was hoping someone could help. We live in the DFW area. The first time the trees died after a year in the ground. We recently purchased five more. A week before I had the ground ready for planting the trees the trees started turning brown and looking sick. I have sprayed them for bugs and sprayed them with a fungal spray. It does not seem to have helped. Not sure what to do? Hoping someone had some ideas.
Juliea S on Jun 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Jessica is right. Especially in your area these have to be watered and well. A deep watering 2-3 times per week for the few weeks and then 2 times per week for the next couple months. You are in the warmest zone for these plants. So even after the first year they will grow best with a deep watering once a week or so in summer. I would recommend planting these in fall in your area. It is more likely heat and water not pests or disease issue.
I live right next to a road in New Hampshire and want the trees as a privacy hedge. My concern is that during the winter we get a lot of snow which is plowed on the side of the road. These trees will be protected when new and small but when they are full grown will they be able to withstand feet of snow being plowed toward them?
A shopper on Jul 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't definitely think they can as long as the snow isn't smashing them down. They can definitely tolerate the chilly snow on their foliage and the branches are pretty sturdy.
How fast do these trees grow, height wise??
Dianna L on Aug 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Emerald Green Thujas grow about 1 foot per year.
Can I keep this tree in a large pot?
Erica S on Aug 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, The larger the better.
Best time of the year to plant these trees?
Matty B on Aug 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The best time of the year we recommend to plant is in the fall. However you can still plant at any time of the year. The water requirements in the spring and summer are much larger than in the fall.
I live in San Antonio, Texas. Would the Arborvitae Tree be the right tree for my area? Thank you for any helpful response.
CESAR on Feb 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, you are a zone 9 and the Emerald Green Arborvitae grows in zones 3-8. If you are looking for an evergreen screen, I would recommend wax myrtles for your area. If you want something a bit closer to the look of the Em Arb, look at the steeds holly or the blue point juniper. Keep them well watered during establishment and throughout the first growing season for best results.
Can I order then now and put them in the ground when spring comes?
Shirlz on Dec 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes! You can order now and we can send your order in the spring. Just let us know ahead of time.
My arborvitae are turning brown on the inside. Are they dying?
Donna G on Nov 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, not at all. This is totally normal for many evergreens at this time of year. Just shedding some older growth.
Can these trees be trimmer to mainrain a certain height ?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. They tolerate pruning well.
Will theese tree's be able to thrive in South Florida??
TREEDUDE on Aug 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: These trees grow in zones 3 - 8. S FL is growing zone 10 or 11 so I would not recommend these trees for you.
