How To Care for your new Double Red Knock Out Rose

WateringRed double knockout rose

Water in well when planting.  Keep soil moist for the first month.  Once established, allow soil to dry before watering.

Pruning

Wait for spring! The growth of new shoots from the canes of your rose bush is a sign that it’s time to prune. This often coincides with when forsythia start to bloom. Pruning can help maintain vigor and strength as well as encourage better blooming.  We recommend pruning back, leaving about 1 foot for Knockout Roses.

Remember the rule of three! Your Knock Out® Rose bush will triple in size in a season, so cutting it back to approximately 1’ will make it finish at approximately 3’.

Planting

Choose a location that gets 6-8 hours of sun each day. Dig a hole that is about twice as wide and as deep as the container. Place plant in the hole so that the base of the plant is level with the soil. Fill in the hole with loose soil. Water around the base of the plant. For the next few weeks, check the rose and water as needed.

How to Care

Fertilize when planting and in early spring with our balanced, slow release fertilizer. Mulch will help minimize weeds, keep the soil moist, and add essential nutrients. Water slowly at the base of the plant. The frequency of watering depends on your soil and climate as well as the age of the plant. Prune in early spring to promote healthy blooms. Never prune in fall or winter.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Is it too late to plant in Oklahoma?
marymelinda b on Jul 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can actually plant anytime of the year. Just make sure you keep it watered and from drying out.
Can I continue to remove the blooms till the first frost or should I stop 30 days or earlier to let bush set
itself for winter?
Ron L on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Karen is right. It really doesn't matter. There is no need to deadhead, but it certainly won't hurt them if you do. Some even prune the whole bush back to about 6 inches in winter. So, while these don't have to be pruned, they tolerate it well.
Only morning sun. Will roses thrive?
Valerie T on Sep 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would lean toward no. These roses do best in full sun. They can do well in part sun aka about 6 hours of full sun so if you think they get 6 hours they should do ok.
how large will the 3 gallon bush be?
A shopper on Apr 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: currently they are 12-18" tall.
If I order now, do you send them now or when it is safe to plant in zone 5b?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes we will send right now unless you would like to hold your order. As long as the ground is not frozen you can plant.
I live in zone 6. It is now September and I need 6 of these planted. We are trying to sell. Will they survive if we plant this late?
Tracey K on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Definitely! Even in cooler zones as long as you plant at least 4-6 weeks prior to winter these will do well.
