Product Details

It's gorgeous colorful appearance and manageable size make the Coral Bark a perfect focal or accent tree especially for smaller yards and gardens. Plant this Maple near a deck or patio. This small tree is actually large for a Japanese Maple with its mature height of 15 to 25 feet. The spread is narrow at 12 to 15 feet. This size provides a unique feature most Japanese Maples can't offer...shade. This makes this tree perfect for a backyard sanctuary, rock garden or meditation garden.  Consider a group or border planting for a big impact.

The Coral Bark is easy to grow and very low maintenance. It is resistant to most pests and diseases. This tree can tolerate full sun and is resistant to leaf scorch, a common issue in Japanese maples.

How To Care for your new Coral Bark Japanese Maple

When planting your Coral Bark Maple be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive.  Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant.  However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your Maple almost any time of the year.

Coral Bark Maples tolerate full sun to part shade.  They are one of the few Japanese Maples that tolerates full sun even in warmer zones. Like other Japanese maples you may see some leaf scorch when they are young, especially if they are not getting adequate water.  Keep your tree watered if you do notice leaf scorch, but don't panic. Leaf  Scorch is not going to affect the overall health of your tree.   Japanese Maples prefer soil that is well-drained, but moist, neutral to slightly acidic, and nutrient rich.  However, Japanese Maples will adapt to a variety of soils.  Mulching will keep the roots moist and protect them from extreme temperatures in winter.  Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.  Japanese Maples should be watered often enough to keep the soil moist.  Do not allow the the soil to dry completely or be overly saturated.  Either condition can harm a Japanese Maple.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost. Choose a slow release fertilizer.  When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Japanese Maples don't generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success.  Scale, Mites, and Aphid are insects that can occasionally affect Japanese Maples.  You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin. Another potential pest of Japanese Maples is the Japanese Beetle. Look into parasitic nematodes and bacillus thuringiensis for effective, organic control of this pest.

Landscape Ideas for your Coral Bark Japanese Maple

The Coral Bark Japanese Maple is a perfect accent or focal tree for water, rock or meditation gardens.  Plant in a mixed bed with Junipers for out of this world texture.  Add a few rocks and your neighbors will think you hired a professional!

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Just received my new coral bark maple tree. It's quite large. I ordered the 5/6 foot and I thought it was going to be skinny for the price. This one is worth 200+ at my local garden center. I am super happy!!!

How are the roots of the tree protected from the beginning to delivery?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All of our plants are in containers in soil and then securely packaged in a box. Our packing system is very thorough. We do everything we can to protect your tree in shipment.
Can I pot it and keep indoors ?
Shweta on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have never done it, but it loves direct to partial sun so keeping it indoors might not be a good idea. It also does well in clay or sandy soil. So if you try to pot it, use sandy soil.
Will it grow in corona California?
