This is the tree you have been searching for! This stunning new dwarf crape myrtle variety from Black Diamond has vibrant red blooms with just a hint of hot pink that pop against its deep purple to black leaves. The sexy Black Diamond Red Hot Crape Myrtle is one RED HOT momma!

This compact tree matures around 10-12 feet tall and about 6-8 feet wide.  Black Diamond Crapes are perfect for small areas and urban yards with minimal space. Red Hot Black Diamond Crape Myrtles tend toward an upright, vase shape tree as compared to the other Black Diamond Reds. The Red Hot is generally the largest of the 3 reds at maturity. If you prefer classic looking crape myrtle that is most likely to hit that 12 foot mark the Red Hot is your best choice.

Plant this crape myrtle up your driveway, or around your patio. The colors are so distinctive that your landscape will set itself apart from the rest. Looking for a flowering hedge?  Plant this crape myrtle every 6 feet and have a beautiful flowering hedge.  This tree can certainly stand on its own as an accent or specimen!  The Black Diamond Red Hot is the ideal centerpiece for your rock or zen garden or mixed bed.  This tree even grows well in containers. Cooler zones can grow them as a patio plant and move inside in the winter.

These stunning trees are drought tolerant and low maintenance.  It is hard to believe you can get this unique and phenomenal beauty out of a plant that is so easy to grow! The Black Diamond series of crape myrtles are extremely resistant to diseases including powdery mildew and rarely have problems with pests.

Plant in full sun for best flowering.  Crapes are adaptable to any well-draining soils.  For the fastest growth and the best flowers fertilize when planting and in spring with our balanced, slow release fertilizer.  Black Diamond Crapes thrive in zones 7 to 10.  Zone 6 can grow these beauties in the ground and treat as a perennial.  Simply mulch the roots heavily in winter. Your plant will emerge from the roots in spring and reach about 4 feet every year.

Order your Red Hot Black Diamond Crape Myrtle today. This tree is a great gift for the love of your life or your cool mom!  They will love it!  Trust us!

How To Care for your new Black Diamond® Red Hot™ Crape Myrtle Tree

Be sure you choose the right location and conditions for your new Black Diamond Red Hot Crape Myrtle to thrive.  Crape Myrtles are easy to grow and don't require much maintenance.  You can plant your crape myrtle just about any time of year.  Avoiding temperature extremes is ideal, of course.  Black Diamond Crape Myrtles grow in zones 7-10.  They can survive into a zone 6, but mulch heavily in winter and treat like a perennial.  Expect about a 4 foot shrub in zone 6.

These trees prefer full sun, but can tolerate mild shade and are adaptable to just about any soil as long as it is well-draining.  Crape Myrtles do enjoy a slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.0 or 6.5 being ideal, but as long as your soil isn't extremely alkaline there is no need to modify it.  Mulching with a 2-3 inch layer of pine straw or pine bark is ideal for crape myrtles.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as these increases the chances of pests and disease.  Mulching helps keep soil moist and protects roots during temperature extremes. Crape Myrtles should be watered deeply about 2 times per week after planting for about 3 months.  After this establishment period, water deeply about once weekly when conditions are dry.  Crape Myrtles are drought tolerant once established.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting with our balanced, slow release fertilizer to give your tree a boost and help it achieve the best blooms Crape Myrtles do not generally require pruning, but if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches.  Avoid the need to over prune your tree by choosing a variety that fits best in your chosen spot.  You can choose a variety that is only 5 feet tall up to varieties that grow over 30 feet tall.  Black Diamond Crape Myrtles grow up to 12 feet tall and about 8 feet wide.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success.  Black Diamond Crape Myrtles rarely have issues with pests and are disease resistant.  Aphids are one of the few pests that attack crape myrtles.  Minor infections aren't likely to cause problems, but a severe infection can weaken your tree.  You can treat aphids naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  Black Diamond Crape varieties are extremely resistant to Powdery Mildew.

Landscape Ideas for your Black Diamond® Red Hot™ Crape Myrtle Tree

Black Diamond Red Hot Crape Myrtles will look great anywhere in your landscape.  The red bloom clusters and deep burgundy-purple to black leaves add vibrant, bold and unique elements to your yard. The mature size is up to 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide and the natural shape of the Red Hot is upright and vase-shaped so be mindful of this when choosing a spot for your tree. Black Diamond Crape Myrtles look great as single specimens planted in your yard and provide a wonderful focal point. These crape myrtles will also look great framing your front door or the front entrance of your driveway. Plant 1 on each side and watch your house turn into a home.  Another stellar look for these smaller crape myrtles is a grouped hedge.  You will love the stunning, colorful distinction this will add to your yard.  Planting about 6 feet apart can even provide some subtle privacy in spring, summer and fall.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Fast shipment, excellent packaging, and healthy plant
First time online ordering a tree from other state, so I was not sure what would happen. It came two days after I placed the order. The package was so good that the tree was not damaged at all (well, some flowers and several leaves were cut off when I was pulling the tree out of the long box, my fault). Now it is planted for three weeks and looking like it has adjusted to its new home.

I have a question regarding pruning: when and how should I prune it so that it becomes a multi-trunk tree? It came as a single-trunk little tree, I think.

Crapes can be multi or single trunks. You can prune back when your tree is dormant to make it more bushy. That lower branch will likely be a second trunk as it grows.

Is this a tree or a bush?
Stacy S on Sep 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: they are considered trees, but they are multitrunk as are most crape myrtles. You can prune them back on the top to make them more bushy and shrub-like.
