Product Details

The Autumn Twist Encore Azalea is not your normal everyday Azalea. It has all the great characteristics of an original Azalea and so much more! With this shrub producing flowers for longer periods of time, it is a must have for any landscape design.

The flowers of the Autumn Twist Encore Azalea have their own distinctive appeal with a white and purple tie-dye effect. During the flowering seasons, the trumpet shaped flowers grow in clusters at the end of each branch and blanket the entire shrub. From spring to summer you can enjoy a watercolor dream with white and purple petals for the entire warm season. The Autumn Twist Encore Azalea maintains a small and compact size, only reaching a height of 4-5 feet and a width of 4-5 feet.

The Autumn Twist Encore Azalea is a compact shrub that fills in those smaller spaces in your landscape.  In the spring and summer, a beautiful bounty of blooms is the highlight.  In fall and winter the shrub is a beautiful backdrop to other flowering plants in your beds and gardens.  Use in a mixed bed as a foundation plant or even in a wooded natural area.  If you prefer, it also looks great planted as a lone specimen in a container surrounded by seasonal annuals.

This azalea is fairly heat tolerant and requires little to no maintenance once established. It is recommended to prune after the blooming season and fertilize in the early spring to enjoy a fully blossomed shrub during the growing seasons. Encore azaleas are hardy evergreen shrubs that are great for adding color to your landscape.

How To Care for your new Autumn Twist™ Encore® Azalea

When planting your Azalea be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new plants to thrive.

Planting time: Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant Azaleas.  However, if you avoid freezing and extremely hot temperatures you can plant any time of the year

Sun: Full or part sun

Soil: Be sure your soil is well-drained and acidic.  If you have alkaline soil, be sure to amend your soil.  To acidify your soil amend with compost, elemental sulfur, or use fertilizers specific for acid loving plants.  Mulching with pine straw or pine bark will help over time as they begin to break down, but are not an immediate solution.  To improve drainage in something like a heavy clay soil, add compost and be sure to loosen up the soil well before planting.

Fertilizer:  Choose a fertilizer for acid loving plants.  Fertilize in late winter or early spring to give the upcoming blooms a boost.

Pruning:  You don’t need to prune azaleas, but pruning after they are done blooming can help encourage a bushier growth and renew an older plant.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Amazing quality
We purchased this, one of 3 Encore azaleas, at the end of the bloom season in the PNW. Perhaps the unusually long winter weather contributed; however, we were impressed when, after transplanting, Autumn Twist almost immediately developed new buds and a predonderous amount of new growth. We couldn't be more pleased with the plant and the delicate beauty of the blooms. Wow!

looked kinda beat up
we'll see how it looks in a month (or maybe in the Spring), but getting these plants shipped to you in a box does beat them up a bit. They wont arrive looking like you picked them up yourself at a nursery or whatever. We'll see...

Already have Autumn Rough encores on the hill overlooking the water. They have consistently bloomed twice a season. The Autumn Twist encores will highlight the glenrose battlefield brick at the base of our new home. If they bloom 3 times during the season, even better!

A shopper on Dec 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it should do fine. As long as it has room to grow. Make sure you use a high quality potting soil.
Will this azalea bloom in the shade?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Azaleas do better in filtered light, such as under pine trees, they need some light to flower. Mary D.
