Product Details

The Autumn Blaze Maple is a hybrid tree created from two American classics; the red maple and the silver maple, taking the best characteristics from each. The Autumn Blaze Maple is not found naturally in the wild.  It must be propagated to make it available to consumers.

Enjoy vibrant fall color!  The Autumn Blaze Maple turns orange to crimson red in the fall which looks great as a specimen tree or planting in clusters.

The Autumn blaze maple is a fast growing tree that can reach a height of 50 feet and a width of 40 feet. No more waiting for you maple tree to grow, because the silver maple contributes to the vigor without interfering with the natural strength of the red maple.

It’s the best of both worlds!  Not only is the Autumn blaze maple tree fast growing and strong, it is adaptable to many soil conditions, disease and insect resistant. These specimens are a one of a kind tree that provide fabulous, red, fall foliage.

The Autumn Blaze grows in zones 3-8 and can be planted in rural or urban areas. It grows at a fast rate and is able to tolerate pollution, while also providing shade and beautiful fall foliage. With all these amazing qualities to offer, it is among the elite of landscaping plants.

How To Care for your new Autumn Blaze Maple Tree

When planting your Autumn Blaze Maple tree be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive.  Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant.  However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your Maple almost any time of the year.

These trees tolerate full sun to part shade and prefer soil that is well-drained, slightly acidic, and nutrient rich.  However, Maples will adapt to a variety of soils. If you have alkaline soil, you can amend your soil.  To acidify your soil, amend with compost, elemental sulfur, or use fertilizers specific for acid loving plants.  Mulching with pine straw or pine bark will help over time as they begin to break down, but are not an immediate solution for increasing acidity.  Mulching will also aid in keeping the roots cool and moist.  Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.  Maples should be watered often enough to keep the soil moist.  Maples can tolerate a wet area, but they shouldn't be in standing water.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost.  Choose a slow release fertilizer.  When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Maple trees don't generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.  Maples are salt intolerant so keep them away from road sides in cooler climates and beach areas as well as any area known for soils with high salinity.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success. Scale and Aphids are insects that can affect Maples.  You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  Occasionally fungal issues can arise. Generally, treating after infection isn't extremely effective, so if you have problems yearly treat in early spring with fungicides to prevent infection.  Neem Oil is an organic method of treating some fungal diseases and pests.  It can be effective, but the entire tree must be coated in order for this method to be effective.

Planting Directions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 1-2 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

High hopes
Just planted my tree a week ago so not sure it is something I can review yet. I do have high hopes that it will grow fast. Right now it is small and no leaves so still dormant.

Smaller than I expected
I can't wait to see if this tree lives up to expectations. It's smaller than expected; I'm thinking that a picture for the ACTUAL size and make of the tree would do justice.

Beware shipper
I ordered two trees. The trees come with the root ball wrapped in plastic the tree is encapsulated in a cardboard tube so to speak. The freight company deposited the trees in my front yard in full sunlight after a weeks travel under unknown conditions. When I unboxed the trees the root balls were hot to touch. I planted both trees one has sprouted leaves and started to grow, the other tree is showing no signs of life. I will have to probably buy another, disappointed in the shipping method.

We planted a Autumn Blaze Maple in the spring. It is now Oct. and it is still green. When does it turn red or orange?
Bob T on Oct 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This just depends on the temps. Generally it will start changing sometime within the next month. Sooner in cooler locations.
What time(s) of the year can you plant this tree?
Kellie B on Jul 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. However, in warmer climates you are open to a majority of winter and cooler zones you can plant in early or even late summer as well. Just take care to avoid extreme temperatures.
Does this tree come with soil? or is it Bare Root?
A shopper on Jul 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: All of our trees are currently rooted in a container that makes it much more easier for our customers. We do not carry any bare root product.
How long does it live?
A shopper on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Just bought them, not real familiar with life span but mine are doing great. Just make sure you water them every day for the first week, then 1 time a week for about a month unless in a dry season then I water at least 2 times a week. Anything will live a life time if taken care of.
Do helicopters fall from the tree?I
A shopper on Sep 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Autumn Blaze Maple is considered a seedless variety although apparently they can on occasion still produce seedpods but in much lower quantities than other maples.
Hi I live in the San Francisco/east Bay Area. Would the autumn blaze tree do well here? Temps generally range from 32 degrees F in the winter to 100 degrees in the summer with dry heat.
A shopper on Apr 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The October Glory and the Red Maple are a bit more heat tolerant growing into a zone 9 so those may be better options for you. You can find your zone here by searching with your zip code.
So these are grown trees? I bout some online last year and got roots!!! 😑
Kayla B on Jun 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I bought mine last year. It was about 6 feet tall and was basically a long stick with a dirt ball, a few small branches and had about 6 leaves. I followed the suggested planting instructions and this year it is growing great, branching out and full of leaves. I am very pleased.
How far apart should these trees be planted?
A shopper on Oct 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: at least 25 feet
When is the best time to spray a dormant oil spray on an autumn blaze maple? What kind or brand is best? I had those red pimples (mites) all over my leaves last summer and it drove me nuts! Thanks :)
Andrew S on Feb 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Go with a trusted brand name like Bonide or Bayer. You want to spray in later winter/early spring. I would say the best way to time it would be right when you see the first blooms starting to pop in your neighborhood. When you are trying to get rid of over-wintering critters, it is best to hit them right when they are starting to wake up generally.
what diameter is the trunk of tree when delivered?
Deb M on Oct 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Autumn Blaze Maple Trees are .75" Caliper
Is pale green normal for spring and summer foliage of Autumn Blaze Maple?
Helen L on Oct 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: green is the leaf color in spring in summer. If it a very light or yellowish green on mature leaves I would consider boosting with some fertilizer in spring.
How big is the tree when it is shipped?
Rachel S on Jul 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: we ship each is to its size specifications. This tree ships at 6-7 feet tall.
