Looking for that perfect evergreen shrub to add just a little pizzazz to your yard? We suggest the Wintergreen Boxwood. Also known as the Korean Boxwood, this small yet beautiful shrub is perfect for all yard designs, big or small.

The Wintergreen Boxwood is a slow-growing shrub. It tends to grow between 2-3 inches annually. At maturity, it will reach between 2-4 feet in height and 3-5 feet in width. This boxwood is covered with hardy, green foliage that becomes darker as the Wintergreen Boxwood ages. The leaves of the Wintergreen are fairly small and delicate. They have both a smooth look and feel to them as well. When other Boxwood shrubs turn yellow and lose their color in the dreadful winter months, the Wintergreen is still vibrant and green.

Wintergreen Boxwoods can grow in full sun but prefers partially shaded locations. They adapt well to a variety of soils. If left untrimmed, the Wintergreen grows into a toadstool mushroom shape. Wintergreen Boxwoods are usually shaped into a round sphere, square cubes, or ovals. When they are well-trimmed they will hold shape for quite some time due to their slow-growing pace. Whether you are a beginner in the planting world or a professional this easy-to-maintain shrub adds a great look to any landscape design with only minimal maintenance.

Wintergreen Boxwood FAQ

How To Plant These Shrubs

Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide, place in hole and backfill with soil. Layer with 2 inches of mulch while making sure not to pile mulch against the trunk and water deeply.

What Makes This Boxwood Turn Brown?

Drought stress and improper watering could cause browing. These shrubs will perform best when watered once weekly during dry periods, including in winter.

How Far Apart Should Wintergreen Boxwoods Be Planted?

Plant 2-3 feet apart to accomodate a 4-6 foot spread.

Wintergreen Boxwood Care

The Wintergreen Boxwood grows in full sun to part shade. It adapts well to a variety of well-draining soils. Water deeply twice weekly when newly planted to help the roots grow properly. Add 2-3 inches of mulch to help your new plants stay moist. Once established this boxwood is drought tolerant. However, boxwoods will perform best when watered once weekly during dry periods, including in winter. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer to give your boxwood a boost. Pruning can be done anytime of the year. However, it is best to avoid pruning in late fall as pruning will stimulate new growth that will be too tender to survive the freezing, winter temperatures.

This boxwood is deer, rabbit, and pollution tolerant as well as pest and disease resistant.
