Do you love crape myrtles but hate the diseases associated with them?  Meet the new and improved First Editions® Magic™ Crape Myrtle Series.  These crape myrtles showcase new color combinations, compact size, and disease resistance.

The intensely pigmented violet-purple blooms set the Purple Magic Crape Myrtle apart from other crape myrtles

The Purple Magic Crape Myrtle produces an abundance of crinkly, purple blooms July to September.  New growth starts out as a red in the spring before turning green in the summer.  An additional perk of the Magic Series Crape myrtles is the size.  A smaller and more compact crape myrtle, this tree easily transforms into a nice hedge with its round, bushy form.  Growing only 6 to 8 feet high makes this a perfect, compact ornamental tree to dress up any landscape.  Not only is this tree bursting with color and compact, but it is also resistant to disease.

Compact, dense, and colorful, this tree/shrub variation of the Crape Myrtle is absolutely stunning. Give it sunlight and good drainage and it will take off with little maintenance. Sit back and relax and let this show stopping Crape Myrtle perform magic before your eyes!

Selection was based on space, color and plant type suggested by landscaper. My experience with Crepe Myrtles made this an easy decision as they are hardy and the neighbor had a beautiful blooming Crimson version.

What is the best time of the year to plant crape Myrtle?
Willie A on Jul 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Crape myrtles can be planted at anytime of the year.
How big will this Purple Magic Crepe Myrtle get? Would the plant be 2-3 feet when I receive it?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the current size we have is 2-3ft when shipped. The mature size is 6-8 tall and wide.
Can this be planted in the fall in zone 6 or better to wait until the spring?
Katie on Sep 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would lean toward spring or summer for planting the Purple Magic Crape Myrtle in a zone 6. But if you get it in the ground soon and water it appropriately (deeply a couple times a week) into winter and mulch it in well it will probably do okay.
Can I order the purple magic and have you ship it closer to Christmas?
MIKE S on Nov 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. Just give us a call or send an email with your ship date and we can take care of it for you.

Planting & Care

How to Plant & Care for Your new Purple Magic™ Crape Myrtle

Be sure you choose the right location and have the appropriate conditions for your new Purple Magic Crape Myrtle to thrive.  Luckily Crape Myrtles are pretty easy to grow and don't require much maintenance at all.  If you follow growing zone guidelines for your particular variety you can plant your crape myrtle just about any time of year.  Purple Magic Crape Myrtles grow in zones 6-9.  We do recommend to avoid planting when temperatures are above 85 degrees.

These trees prefer full sun, but can tolerate some shade and are adaptable to just about any soil as long as it is well-draining.  Crape Myrtles do enjoy a slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.0 or 6.5 being ideal, but as long as your soil isn't extremely alkaline there is no need to modify it.  Mulching with a 2-3 inch layer of pine straw or pine bark is ideal for crape myrtles.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as these increases the chances of pests and disease.  Mulching helps keep soil moist and protects roots during temperature extremes.   Crape Myrtles should be watered deeply about 2 times per week after planting for about 3 months.  After this establishment period, water deeply about once weekly when conditions are dry.  Crape Myrtles are drought tolerant once established.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost and help it achieve the best blooms.  Choose a balanced, slow release fertilizer.  If you know your soil is on the basic side choose a fertilizer that is for acid loving plants.  Crape Myrtles do not generally require pruning, but if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches.  Avoid the need to over prune your tree by choosing a variety that fits best in your chosen spot.  You can choose a variety that is only 5 feet tall up to varieties that grow over 30 feet tall.  Magic series Crape Myrtles grow up to 10 feet tall and wide.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering and fertilization are the keys to your success.  There are not many pests or diseases that cause severe problems for crape myrtles.  Aphids are one of the few pests that attack crape myrtles.  Minor infections aren't likely to cause problems, but a severe infection can weaken your tree.  You can treat aphids naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  The Magic series crape myrtles are extremely resistant to Powdery Mildew and other diseases.

Landscaping Ideas

Landscape Ideas for your Purple Magic™ Crape Myrtle

The Magic series of Crape Myrtles will look great anywhere in your landscape.  The colorful bloom clusters are sure to brighten up your yard. Mature size is only 6-8 feet tall and wide so be mindful of this when choosing a spot for this tree-shrub. The Magic series look great as single specimens planted in your yard and provide a wonderful focal point for a bed or garden.  This variety tends to grow more like a large, full bush than a tree.  This Crape Myrtle will also look great framing your front door or the front entrance of your driveway. Plant 1 on each side and watch your house turn into a home.  Another stellar look for these shrub-like crape myrtles is a grouped hedge or cluster.  You will love the color and beauty this will add to your yard   Planting about 5 or 6 feet apart can even provide privacy in spring, summer and fall.

Planting Instructions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Planting a shrub digging the hole

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 2 - 3 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Wrong color
The crate Myrtle I received was supposed to be a purple color. The one I received was fuchsia. When I called to complain I got an email back requesting that I wait three weeks in order for the color to change. After more than A week, the color is still exactly the same as when I received it.
