Product Details

Bring some color into your landscaping with the Newport Flowering Plum Tree. At maturity this tree will reach 25’ to 30’ high with a beautiful canopy of 20‘to 25’. Due to the beautiful color and size of this tree, it is often made the focal point of ones landscaping design.

Spring produces beautiful white to pink colored blossoms with green foliage that eventually transitions over to a deep dark purple in the summer. 1 inch rounded dark purple fruits are produced in late summer and often attract wildlife such as squirrels and birds.

This tree is a great ornamental tree to use in your landscaping and is actually considered one of the hardiest of plum trees.

Plant this tree out in the center of the lawn or plant a couple in a staggered pattern along the back yard. Use the Newport Plum at the corner of your home. Plant about 10ft. away to allow the plenty of room to grow. Wrap a bed around the tree and add hostas beneath is to add color contrast.

You can even use them at the top of your driveway entrance. Plant one or go for a more symmetrical look with one tree on each side. These trees can be used alone as single specimens or even used in a planting bed with additional shrubs and perennials.

This tree thrives in full sun, so keep this in mind when choosing an area for your new tree. Once your tree is planted, maintain a regular watering schedule for the first growing season until a deep and extensive root system is established. Once the tree has become established, the watering scheduled can be cut back unless there are periods of extreme heat.

Prune your Newport Plum Tree in the winter to maintain a tidy and neat appearance.

How much does it grow per year?
Tracey on Aug 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Plum trees typically grow 8-24 inches per year.
I'd like to know if the fruit is edible?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they are actually edible but this tree is not generally a fruit producer. It will produce small fruit. It is better suited for its beauty.
I have had my Newport flowering plum for 18-20 yrs, and am plagued in spring with tent caterpillars, but have managed to treat and rid of them. But now, mid-July some of the leaves are turning brown and dying............what could cause this? Never happened before.

Planting & Care

How to Plant & Care for Your new Newport Flowering Plum Tree

When planting your Newport Plum be sure to choose the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive.  Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant.  However, if you avoid freezing temperatues and extreme heat you can plant your Plum tree almost any time of the year.

These trees tolerate full sun to part shade, but prefer full sun.  The Newport Plum tree is extremely adaptable to any soil as long as it is well drained.  Water deeply when planting and twice weekly for 1 to 3 months while this tree is establishing.  Once your tree is established, it is drought tolerant; you will only need to water during dry spells. Adding a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch is recommended especially with newly planted trees.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost.  Choose a slow release fertilizer.  When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Prune when your Newport Plum is dormant (winter - early spring) to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success. Scale, Aphids and Mealy Bugs are insects that can affect Flowering Plum trees.  You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  Tent Caterpillars are sometimes an issue for Newport Plums.  These can be treated with an organic spray, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt),  Occasionally fungal issues can arise. Generally, treating after infection isn't extremely effective, so if you have problems yearly treat in early spring with fungicides to prevent infection.  Neem Oil is an organic method of treating and preventing some fungal diseases and pests.  It can be effective, but the entire tree must be coated in order for this method to be effective.

Planting Instructions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 2 - 3 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.
