Product Details

The Thuja Green Giant has quickly surpassed the Leyland Cypress to become the most popular, privacy screen in the United States.

But this Thuja is so much more than a privacy screen!  We have never seen a tree receive more honors than the Green Giant.

To name a few:

  • Elite Plant from the US National Arboretum
  • Gold Medal from The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
  • Plant of Merit from the Missouri Botanical Society

Why is this tree so special?

The deep green foliage of the Green Giant cascades down its branches into a feathery point.  This fragrant foliage is soft to the touch making it perfect for families with children and pets.  This Thuja has lovely, natural flowing branches while still maintaining the classic pyramidal shape you love!

The Thuja Green Giant is extremely fast growing.  In fact it grows up to 5 feet in a single year!  This means you will have a privacy hedge in no time!  Even if you just want a gorgeous focal tree think about how quickly this sturdy Thuja will fill in that empty space in your landscape!

The Green Giant thrives in full to part sun and tolerates a wide variety of soils.  You are going to love how easy this tree is to care for due to its pest and disease resistance as well as drought tolerance!  There is no need to prune your Thuja.  However, if you prefer a maintained look for your Green Giant hedge this hardy evergreen can tolerate even heavy pruning.  Pruning the tops will even slow growth and help to control height.  Add some of our balanced fertilizer at the time of planting, allow your new trees to establish, and before long you will have a maintenance free tree!

With their increasing popularity, Thuja Green Giants are getting harder to find.  Don't miss out!  Buy yours today!

If I want a complete privacy row do I plant them 5 feet or 10 feet apart? How wide do they grow max. width?
PrecioustoHim on Sep 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mature width is 10-15 feet. 5 ft is a bit too tight in my opinion. You'll get a nice tight hedge with about 8ft and they won't be over crowded.
How do these hold up to weather such as heavy snow events?
C H on Oct 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I live about 1 hour south of Cleveland so the winters can be a little harsh. I've had a 7 foot one in for the last two years with no issues. I put some new plantings (3 footers) in this year that I will cover for the winter to be sure there are no issues. Hope that helps.
Live on long Island NY can i plant Thuja trees during december ?
Roger M on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I guess it depends on when the ground freezes as directions indicate watering daily for 2-3 weeks. Planted my 3 Thuja in October and still watering.
Will this tree thrive in Florida?
A shopper on Sep 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The very similar, but more heat hardy Leyland Cypress would be a better choice for FL. If you are in N FL the Thuja Green Giant would probably do okay, but even there the Leyland Cypress would be a better choice.
How many would I need for a 66 foot area? Take in to consideration that from left to right there is a fence so about 6-8 feet in from a fence???

BEST ANSWER: 7 or 8.
How will these trees do in central Alabama? We get 95* Temps in summer and can go 1 month without rain.
Alice B on Sep 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Most of central Alabama is a zone 8 and thuja green giants can grow in zones 5 to 9. You will definitely want to keep your trees watered well throughout the first year (especially in the first 3 months and during any dry or hot periods) and in subsequent years when it is extremely dry. Even though it is drought tolerant you don't want to allow the soil to completely dry out especially when temps are high. The Leyland Cypress is a great option for you too and is a bit more heat and drought tolerant than the thuja.
How tall do they get?
A shopper on Sep 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Thuja green giant trees can reach heights up to 40-60 feet tall.

Planting & Care

How to Plant & Care for Your new Thuja Green Giant Trees

When planting, stagger your new trees 3-4 feet apart or in a row about 5-10 feet apart. Get creative! Plant in curves or slight s-forms and keep it flowing. Trees do not have to be in a straight line.

Inside those unique curves, add some flair and excitement with colorful plants like Drift Roses, Junipers, Abelias, and Azaleas. Mulch around each planting or landscape bed. Mulch will keep out weeds and provide moisture for your new trees.

Thuja trees need to be watered heavily at time of planting.  Be sure not to let your new trees dry out within the first few months before they are established.   Water your trees as soon as they arrive even before you plant them.  This will ensure that the roots are moist and ready for planting.

We suggest a slow release, high quality fertilizer (like you can find right here on our site) to get your plants started. The more you feed them, the faster they will grow.

There is no need to prune your Thuja Green Giants, but you certainly can to maintain a certain size or shape.

Planting Instructions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 2 - 3 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.
