Product Details

The Gold Mound Spirea can be characterized by its lovely golden foliage that is prominent in the spring. This sweet little glowing shrub maintains a small and compact structure reaching a height of 3 feet and width of 4 feet.

Yellow to golden leaves cover this plant in the spring, then becoming more of a green yellow shade during the growing season. Tiny pink flowers are produced in the form of clusters in the late spring, which attract special visitors such as butterflies. Fall brings out beautiful orange foliage.

The Goldmound Spirea is grown for the foliage over the flowers and is actually one of the most common deciduous small mounding shrubs grown in smaller scale landscaping projects.

do you trim down the spirea during the winter months in New England?

BEST ANSWER: You can touch them up but they do not need to be trimmed for winter.

Planting & Care

How to Plant & Care for Your new Gold Mound Spirea

Deadhead the flowers of the Goldmound Spirea after flowers have produced and become spent. This will promote re-blooming as the season progresses. The best way to deadhead this shrub is by shearing. In addition to dead heading, shearing will also help to maintain the shape and compact nature of the plant.

Pruning is optional if suckers start to form on the plant or you wish to maintain a tight and compact structure for spireas planted in small spaces. The Goldmound Spirea responds well to rejuvenation and is recommended to do so in late winter to very early spring.

Landscaping Ideas

Landscape Ideas for your Gold Mound Spirea

The Gold Mound Spirea is large enough to be used as a main plant in a border, but small enough so that is does not obscure landscape views. These shrubs look great planted along a walkway border or around a patio.

Plant in clusters of 3 or more!  Larger clusters will bring out a bigger bang of color.  These spirea will also look fantastic planted in a group in front of dark holly trees or in front of privacy trees.

We recommend planting them about a 2-3 feet apart to allow for separation when fully matured. The yellow color of the foliage provides a beautiful contrast against a green lawn. Use them around small ornamental trees and plant red and purple annuals in between or in front of these shrubs for pops of color.

Planting Instructions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Fill up hole with water before placing new plant in hole in order to saturate the surrounding soil.  Once the water is absorbed place your plant in the hole and water thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix the potting soil and the soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Step 5:

Fertilize around your plant with the amount recommended on the package. Our special Fertilizer contains all of the nutrients to keep your plants growing and healthy. Repeat every 3 months.

Step 6:

Finish up by mulching around your new plant.  Apply 2 - 3 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Step 7:

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical for plant survival. In the third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.
