Sandy on Aug 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 3 gallon size container for the larger size.
Do they loose their leaves in winter?
A shopper on Nov 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They are deciduous so apparently it's normal. I live on the central coast of CA where the average winter temps are about 35-60, with only about 6 days of below freezing temps, and mine seem to retain most of their leaves but seem to go dormant. It's taken a couple of years for my red one to finally get established and grow. I'm hoping it might actually bloom this year. Based on my experience, I think it just takes them awhile to get established and acclimated.
What is cold tolerance for black diamond crape?
Greg S on Aug 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The temp range where I live is about 40-75F, going down as low as mid 20s a couple days per year. I'm not sure I've had my tree since we had a cold snap so I can only tell you that it can handle anything as low as 40F.

How to plant a crepe Myrtle?
A shopper on Jul 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your tree in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Water the plant in the hole and fill up hole with water. This will give the plant a chance to soak up moisture and also saturate the existing soil around the hole.

Mix the potting soil and existing soil removed from the hole. Start by backfilling soil around the root ball. Carefully pack in the soil to remove any air pockets. Water plant thoroughly again until the soil will not hold any more water. This will ensure that your new plant will be a success.

Finish up by mulching around your new plant. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch around the plant and plant bed. Mulch will help keep the soil moist and keep weeds out.

Keep watered with a hose every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. This is critical to plant survival. The third week, begin to water as needed depending on the weather. Always check by placing your finger under the mulch to see if the soil is moist.

Planting & Care

How to Plant & Care for Your new Black Diamond® Best Red™ Crape Myrtle

Be sure you choose the right location and have the appropriate conditions for your new Black Diamond Best Red Crape Myrtle to thrive.  Luckily Crape Myrtles are pretty easy to grow and don't require much maintenance at all.  If you follow growing zone guidelines for your particular variety you can plant your crape myrtle just about any time of year.  Black Diamond Best Red Crape Myrtles grow in zones 7-10.  We do recommend to avoid planting when temperatures are above 85 degrees.

These trees prefer full sun, but can tolerate some shade and are adaptable to just about any soil as long as it is well-draining.  Crape Myrtles do enjoy a slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.0 or 6.5 being ideal, but as long as your soil isn't extremely alkaline there is no need to modify it.  Mulching with a 2-3 inch layer of pine straw or pine bark is ideal for crape myrtles.  Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as these increases the chances of pests and disease.  Mulching helps keep soil moist and protects roots during temperature extremes.   Crape Myrtles should be watered deeply about 2 times per week after planting for about 3 months.  After this establishment period, water deeply about once weekly when conditions are dry.  Crape Myrtles are drought tolerant once established.  Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost and help it achieve the best blooms.  Choose a balanced, slow release fertilizer.  If you know your soil is on the basic side choose a fertilizer that is for acid loving plants.  Crape Myrtles do not generally require pruning, but if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches.  Avoid the need to over prune your tree by choosing a variety that fits best in your chosen spot.  You can choose a variety that is only 5 feet tall up to varieties that grow over 30 feet tall.  Black Diamond Crape Myrtles grow up to 12 feet tall and about 8 feet wide.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants.  Proper location choice, watering and fertilization are the keys to your success.  There are not many pests or diseases that cause severe problems for crape myrtles.  Aphids are one of the few pests that attack crape myrtles.  Minor infections aren't likely to cause problems, but a severe infection can weaken your tree.  You can treat aphids naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap.  For severe infections use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin.  Black Diamond Crape varieties are extremely resistant to Powdery Mildew.

Landscaping Ideas

Landscape Ideas for your Black Diamond® Best Red™ Crape Myrtle

Black Diamond Best Red Crape Myrtles will look great anywhere in your landscape.  The red bloom clusters and deep burgundy to black leaves add vibrant, bold and unique elements to your yard. Mature size is up to 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide so be mindful of this when choosing a spot for your tree. Black Diamond Crape Myrtles look great as single specimens planted in your yard and provide a wonderful focal point. Black Diamonds Crape Myrtles will also look great framing your front door or the front entrance of your driveway. Plant 1 on each side and watch your house turn into a home.  Another stellar look for these smaller crape myrtles is a grouped hedge.  You will love the stunning, colorful distinction this will add to your yard.  Planting about 6 feet apart can even provide some subtle privacy in spring, summer and fall.

Planting Instructions

Step 1:

Unpack all of your plants right away! Look for the perfect location. Make sure you are planting in the correct light conditions.

Step 2:

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position your plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the original grade of the bed. Also check to make sure it is straight from all sides.

Step 3:

Definitely unique
I've been wanting one, well actually four, of these since I read about them 2 years ago. Theplantingtree.com was the only site that had the larger sized ones. They arrived very well packaged with a goofy little smiley face and in excellent condition. The color combination is very unique. Thank you!
